Statia has gingerbread-house architecture
The "gingerbread homes" have roots stemming from colonial construction methods. Many old structures are adorned with flamboyant "fretwork" - design patterns.
The island is promoting the preservation and enhancement of this traditional architecture as a principal aspect of the tourism development.

Saba has gingerbread-cottage architecture, all painted white with green shutters and red tile roofs, which gives the island an almost fairy tale like look.
